Preparations for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia series are well under way with some great racing on offer for this year which will meet the core objectives of the category - enjoyable, uncomplicated and affordable motor racing for the Porsche competitor.
Challenge Cup Promoters Pty Ltd (CCP), Category Managers for the GT3 Cup Challenge today announced a change to their calendar for 2008 after finalizing track options with the Shannons Nationals Racing Series.
CCP Director, Sven Burchartz today said “We are disappointed that the agreement for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia Series to track share with the GT Championship for 2008 will not proceed, however, thanks to the Shannons Nationals we have been able to secure an alternative calendar and series format and we are confident that the package for this year will offer the Porsche competitor sensational track time at some excellent circuits.”
The revised 2008 Calendar is as follows;
Round 1 May 17 – 18 Mallala, SA
Round 2 Aug 9 – 10 Phillip Island, VIC
Round 3 Aug 30 – 31 Oran Park, NSW
Round 4 Sept 20 – 21 Symmons Plains, TAS
Round 1 and 2 will see the GT3 Cup Challenge series adopt a sprint race format with rolling starts, whilst Round 3 at Oran Park will see the 944 Challenge and GT3 Cup Challenge Porsche categories combine forces on track.
Category Administrator Jodi Zylstra said, “With the late change in the Calendar we were concerned that we would not be able to secure a New South Wales round, so we are extremely appreciative to the 944 Challenge Racing Association for allowing us the opportunity to track share with them at Oran Park. Due to the differences in speed between the two Porsche categories on a shorter circuit, we have agreed with the 944 Challenge guys to adopt a handicap standing start for this Round, and we are sure that this Race format will guarantee sensational on-track racing between the competitors and some awesome viewing for the spectators.”
The Season Finale for 2008 will be held at Symmons Plains where CCP plans to incorporate a longer distance race as well as Prize Money.
Plans are already under way for the 2009 season, with the Shannons Nationals today confirming that the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge series will be at the hallowed Mount Panorama circuit as part of the Bathurst 12hr in 2009.
“We will be a Support Category with the Shannons Nationals in February to the 12Hr which means we will be able to reciprocate the Oran Park favour to the 944 Challenge Racing Association by inviting them to track share with us for that Round. Bathurst will be the season opener and a real taste of what we’ll bring to the competitors for what will be a big 2009," says Zylstra.
